Algoe's concept examines the implication that all is data to be extracted and exploited by questioning the efficacy of algorithms that determine our best fits. This work is a second-skin fabric that grows root-like over each unique body, its form shaped by equations that mimic natural phenomena to emphasize the human figure. Dictated by an algorithm, a calculated best-fit line cuts the fabric, with the remainder discarded. However, the resulting fabric will cease to exist as a whole without its support. Algoe comments on the judgement of an algorithm by calling for human intervention in the creative process. Ironically, though, the algorithm was written by me. In a way, Algoe fights back against today's pervasive data mining and discriminatory algorithms by utilizing personal data and natural harmonic algorithms for uniquely engineered beauty. Computers merely execute programmers' commands, and the speed of computation is mistaken for a computer's authority. But automated iterations are where Algoe's artistic autonomy is restored, positioning the artist as a curator of which algorithm and parameters create art.
To reinterpret algorithms in design without feeding into any external data centers with excessive electricity and water consumption, Algoe is entirely untouched by AI, using only my personal laptop's central processing unit. This dress pattern is simulated over a custom-measured body. Mimicking the growth pattern of corals and brains, my algorithm designs the laser-cut line using the form's curvature data, which determines the rate of differential growth. Steeper curvature equals more bends in the line, emphasizing each unique figure.
Designing with individualized optimization through custom measurements, the computer significantly reduces textile waste in pre-production, as digital visualizations and simulations slash the necessity for physical iterations. Along with reinterpreting computers in creation, Algoe unconventionally utilizes industrially focused machinery. A diode laser cuts the cotton, which uses significantly less electricity than industrial laser cutters. To ensure registration throughout the process, I mounted the textiles to wood and coated the mount with a beeswax resist, chosen for bio-friendly decomposition in post-production, to prevent the parametrically patterned 3D-printed textures from adhering to it. Lastly, to play on the material properties of recycled polyamide interfacing, I constructed the garment solely with heat as stitches and an open flame as cuts, eliminating thread entirely.
